Well deserving of a.....
But by no means the sack!
Let us recount the events as it happened:
Deep in the game, with a 2-1 advantage, Samson Siasia decides to push on for a third goal which would ensure Nigeria finished above Guinea, in one of the most complicated and idiotic qualification guidelines ever designed by a football confederation, and one that only CAF and Hayatou have the special skills to pull out of their arses!
At this time he had the following attacking players on the pitch: Ahmed Musa wide on the right, Nsofor on the left, Emenike in the center and Ike Uche attacking just behind him. In otherwords he had FOUR attacking players on the pitch.
Simultaneously, Mikel Obi was pushing forward from deep in central midfield, and even Yobo was pushing into the opposition half with increasing regularity.
Then in his wisdom Siasia decides to bring on Ekigho Ehiosun for Joel Obi as the FIFTH attacking player in the team. What is worse, the team is not reshaped in midfield, Mikel continues to push forward, and the strikers begin to get in each others way!
Ironically, this is not the first time Siasia would make a move like this, which led me to some foray into his mindset. To understand Siasia's mentality here this is what his top assistant Simon Kalika had to say two years ago to Complete Sports:
I believe that what Samson has going for him is that he is not afraid and he is a good leader. He can decide to play six strikers in a game and is not scared to go against popular opinion if he believes it is right for what he wants.
His football philosophy, which is same as mine, is one of attacking but I admit that he has more guts than I do.
Samson can push so many players forward and I will be telling him that he can’t play so many players in front of the ball but he will say no, no, that he wants us to go for goals and that’s the only way we can win the game.
I remember one of the Olympic team’s qualifying games against Ghana in Abuja and we were losing two zero. Almost all 10 outfield players became attackers and we were able to win 3-2 in the end. LINK

The reality is that the ability to score is not necessarily a factor of how many forwards you can cram into a team.
At 2-1 Nigeria had a mathematical chance to qualify for the nations cup; conceding a tying goal wiped off this advantage. This should've been the primary factor that influenced the tactical decisions as the game drew to an end. If Joel Obi had tired, he could've reshaped his defence to bring Ogude into midfield, with Efe or Yobo moving to right-back and Adeleye coming on for the last few minutes.
Before this period Nigeria had controlled the game for long periods in the first half but lacked the finish and some cutting edge in the last third.
The use of Osaze in a somewhat free role in attack, allowed him ample opportunity to find or create space to recieve the ball, as well as constantly switch play and positions. Overall his movement was superb but he lacked decisiveness in the final third and was slow in recovering his defensive position in the non-possession phase.
However, the team played a little too narrow, especially on the right, which played into the hands of a Guinea team with numbers behind the ball in central areas. Some of this was due to the poor, poor performance of Obasi in both phases of the game. This is the second crucial game in Abuja that Obasi would fail to justify the confidence of his coaches!
What is more, repeated attempts at long balls over the top of the defence, seemed to force the issue where patience and a continuation of the passing game was required. Nearly 80 percent of successful counterattacks by Guinea resulted directly from failed attempts at the ball-over-the-top, especially from Mikel. The remainder resulted from allowing too much space between the defenders and the two central midfielders.
In wide areas, the poor defensive positioning of Obasi and Nsofor vis a vis the fullbacks in the non-possession phase often gifted Guinea space for the diagonal run from out wide.
But overall Nigeria dominated and should've killed off the game as a contest by halftime. At the start of the second half, the game was finely poised for the introduction of Uche and Musa, and both would make the vital difference. But the Guineans remained a threat on the counter, each time feeding off the Nigerian tendency to lose possession in critical areas or stages of the build-up process. Going forward, this has to be one of the biggest lessons of this game!
The result is that Nigeria misses out on the Nations Cup which should've been an important barometer for the Super Eagles rebuilding project.
Going forward, it is ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL that the NFF retain Samson Siasia as coach. In spite of the huge dissapointment in missing out on qualification, there are enough positives in the overall performance of the team to justify continuation.
It would be a monumental error to sack Siasia now and will set the country's football back a few years. If anything, I strongly recommend that the NFF Chairman, Aminu Maigari issue an immediate statement of support for Siasia and that the rebuilding project continues with greater vigor to the friendly against Ghana.
Lack of support for the coach will undermine his authority as coach and the gains made so far in building team harmony and discipline.
If the NFF takes the ill advised route of sacking Siasia, I guarantee that we would almost certainly be looking to appoint another journeyman European coach on the eve of an important tournament.
Thank you for your write up.I think Siasia is definitely a good coach but he has alot to learn in dealing with pro football players as a national team coach. Yes, siasia had a success in youth level. Taken naija to silver winning in Holland 2005 and duplicating the same in Beijing 2008 Olympic. This man siasia was one of the stuborn players in his time, to the point those who follows Green Eagles days would know how Clement Westerhof pulled him out in a game against Ivory Coast in favour of Daniel Amokachi .He Amokachi later relegated Siasia to the bench from there on wards. This all happened because of how indisciplined coach Westerhof thought of siasia then. This man siasia is an intelligent man and am not questioning his hiring as the coach. Right now from your comments above, it's quite clear he lacked in some technical aspect of the game , which resulted to us in finishing second in Holland 2005 and the Olympics. Now we all know what happened today. It would not suprise me if things won't get worse if you let him stay as chief coach with S.E .
ReplyDeleteThe Question Mr. Miagri and others should ask is whether SiaSia is willing to let his ego go in other to become a better coach. Any coach who believe he's the star of a team will only be second place finisher if he's good. Unless he take the next step , allow the talent in the land to do the work for you. Nobody would use lack of discipline for the tie we earned today. I didn't watch the match but it's my conviction that Enyeama is the best talent we have on net and if we're playing a game with such magnitude, he should be on goal even if he's a bench warmer in france. Goaltenders does not have to run down the fields like other players do, so the aguement he's merely a bench warmer does not jive with me.
Tony I agree with you that siasia shouldn't be sacked. I have seen enough positives to know he should remain. Good attacking football. Better discipline on the team. Willingness to try fresh faces (ehiosu, emenike, etc). Nonetheless we lost out of the ANC unexpectedly so nigerians are hurting if not embarrassed. The easy solution is to sack siasia but this is where we have tonshow our growth and maturity as a footballing nation. Sometimes doing the right thing is tough and takes guts. The right thing is to retsina siasia but seek ways to improve his performance to build upon the good things he has done so far. Number one is his man management process must improve. Arguably the decision to leave out enyeama played a big role in yesterday's result. Number two siasia needs to be more tactically flexible. His personnel reads are mostly on point but his alignment of personnel - in adjustment when situation changes - has left me disappointed because I expected such from siasia. He's been sticking with flat 442 for better or worse when we have personnel to play 433 which gives us better balance against credible opposition. In summary, this hurts but keep the man. Don't fire siasia. Green4life
ReplyDeleteSack the mother f!!!! Now. Use the same ruthless medicine he uses to exclude enyeama
ReplyDeleteWhat a very sober write-up! Maybe sacking Siasia may be too impetuous, but for sure something must be done! About what? I also do not know. Blaming the coach for nit using Enyeama is out of point. What about Enyeama performance against Tunisia in Abuja WC qualifier? There is nothing wrong for the attackers to drop to help the defense. Yobo should have been shouting out instructions calling for the players to drop and collect ball. Onyeakachi Apam and Kaita would have superbly did this. We have BIG players in the SE, who by all standards are just average players. We need a foreign technical adviser to work with Siasia. AND HIS PAY MUST BE ADJUSTED IMMEDIATELY TO REFLECT HIS ACHIEVEMENTS.
ReplyDeleteI hear you Fishward my brother... Something in me tells me this siasia will never gong to change. If you believe that you the coach is better than the players, i wonder how siaone would wake up one morning and decide to lay low when it comes to dealing with senior players in the squad. The problem we're having is that nigerians, we like to over kill things. Every nation has the same discipline problem , and that of nigeria is no different compare to other nations in this planet. Ours should not be treated as if it's only in naija where players revolt.Saisia is trying to make our players be what he's not during his days with Green Eagle. As i said in kickoff in the past, the reason why africa will have problem winning the world cup is due our inability of our coaches to assamble the best talents we got to offer. Our national team coach in our continent, whether the whities or indegines coach always seem stretch in decision making to yeild the right result in our preparation and the actual tournament. There always seems to be coach who wants to show that he can win without certain players.
ReplyDeleteThe same act of stupidity has been displayed once again by this Siasia and that's why my people am really worroied about this Siasia dude succeeding in the road to Brazil 2014. I challenge anyone from naija who truly believe your Dele Ayenugba is in the same class as number one( Vincent Enyeama ) i beg that person to speak out now so i can have it with you right here. If not these are condition your stupid Siasia is going to retain his job as cheif coach of the Super eagles, Immediate apology to Engineer Vinny Enyeama for rubishing his good image he has worked tiredless for all his life and as Super Eagles safe hand .Ike shuroumu should sharap if he wants to continue as an assistant with Eagles. How dare that fool to believe that dele aiyenugba is in the same class as Enyeama. If ike shorumu wants to promote the back up as their number one then go ahead and do so, but please don't try to play with the minds of others. At least those who believe in their myopic minds that Dele is as good as enyeama has proven themselves wrong once again just like siasia. If Siasia refuse's to apologise to that man , then i'll certainly dedicate my time in here until he get's fired. If he doesnt know how important to have a good goalie in a time like this, then i wonder how he's going to improve as a coach.
Moses..moses,,moses...How many times did i call your name . please do not come in here with your confusion. You can go back to your Tunisia world or era if you wish. Don't try to compare apple and orange.
ReplyDeleteFire SIa Sia's sorry Ass now and hire Oliseh with a foreign technical adviser to manage the logistics of travel hotel visas etc and leave the coaching to Oliseh. We know our football the problems lie with administration of time facilities and getting players where they need to be in less confusion. So they can perform.
